I have no concrete memory before the age of five.

I have fragmented,

ephemeral memories

that on recall seem to transform
as if it were a photograph rather than an accurate memory.

Sometimes my memory emerges in the form of other people’s stories that I have merged into my psyche as my own.

This memoir explores how the absence of my mother in my early childhood created a palpable presence.

The term absence signifies an undesirable state as seen in its purest usage defined as something missing.

However viewed through the lens of art,

absence as in negative space

is an essential part of the complete piece,

“negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the "real" subject of an image”*

implying that absence is not always something missing

rather the opposite, a space that is noticeably empty-suggests that it isn't.
